Sport Northern Ireland’s Athlete Support Programme

Sport Northern Ireland’s Athlete Support Programme is an investment programme that provides financial support for identified talented sports people to develop to their full potential.  The investment will cover costs in relation to an athletes or teams training programme as they prepare for major competition.

Individuals are not normally eligible to apply directly to the Athlete Support Programme but should submit through the relevant Sport NI recognised Governing Body of sport.   Athletes with a disability are encouraged to apply through their mainstream Governing Body, however where this isn’t possible DSNI can submit an application on behalf of the athlete.

To find out if you meet the eligibility criteria and full details of the funding available please download a copy of the Sport NI Athlete Support Programme Guidance Notes by clicking here.

Before an application can be made minimum performance sports standards must be set by the relevant Governing Body and approved by Sport NI.  To find out if your sport has agreed standards contact Disability Sports NI or your Governing Body directly.

Disability Sports NI currently supports athletes in the sports listed below.  Details of the minimum performance standards for these sports can be viewed by clicking the attached link:
• Blind Snow Skiing
• Blind Golf
• Blind Waterskiing
• Wheelchair Basketball

As well as meeting the relevant minimum performance sports standards athletes must also demonstrate potential to progress in their chosen sport.  It should also be noted that meeting the relevant sport performance standards does not guarantee an investment by Sport NI.

Funding for the athlete support programme runs from January – December with only one closing date per year, usually in October.
