Sat 14th July 2018

British Wheelchair Basketball has named Northern Ireland’s James MacSorley on the GB men’s squad for the 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships, which will take place in Hamburg, Germany from 16-26 August 2018.

James MacSorley is delighted to have been selected saying, "Wheelchair basketball has had a massive impact on my life. It's opened up new doors for me and a number of my most memorable experiences have been through wheelchair basketball.

“In 2016 we made history securing gold at the Junior World Championships when I played for the U23 Men’s GB Team. I am delighted to have progressed to this elite level of International Wheelchair Basketball securing a place on the GB men’s squad for the 2018 World Wheelchair Basketball Championships.”

James has played Wheelchair Basketball from a young age joining the NI Knights Wheelchair Basketball Club in 2000 and in more recent years has also played for the Northern Ireland Wheelchair Basketball Team. Disability Sport NI have supported James to access the elite pathway through the Sport NI, National Lottery funded Sporting Winners Programme. Following extensive training in Northern Ireland with Disability Sport NI’s Wheelchair Basketball Performance Officer Phil Robinson, James progressed to the GB Pathway in 2017, moving to Sheffield to access the centralised training programme.

Elaine Reid, Performance Sport Manager at Disability Sport NI praises James on his selection saying, “At Disability Sport NI we have watched James develop within the sport from a very young age as part of the NI Knights Wheelchair Basketball Club. He has always shown a steely determination and dedication to the sport and we were delighted to be able to support his transition into the elite pathway with GB.”

Jason Kennedy, Head Coach NI Knight Wheelchair Basketball Club shares James’ excitement, “‘NI Knights Wheelchair Basketball Club are delighted and extremely proud to hear the news that James MacSorley has been selected to represent the Great Britain men’s team at the upcoming World Championships in Hamburg.

“We remember him turning up for his first training session as a 5 year old, growing into a fine young man, carrying the Paralympic flag at the London games, winning the World U23 championships last year with GB to now being selected to go to the World Championships, we would like to wish him and both GB teams the best of luck.’

The GB team head into the World Championships in excellent form, following a successful outcome at British Wheelchair Basketball’s recent Continental Clash at EIS Sheffield in which the GB men ended the tournament undefeated, with the final game against Canada streamed live on BBC Sport Online for the first time in the history of the tournament. Held a month before the start of the World Championships, the Continental Clash is seen as a vital preparation tournament for those nations competing, with teams taking the chance to work on different systems and line-ups.
