Powerchair Football Participation Doubles Following £70,000 Funding Boost

The Active Living: No Limits Action Plan contributes to a significant rise in Powerchair Football Participation.

The Irish Football Association has welcomed the funding of over £70,000 for 11 Strikeforce powerchairs from the Department for Communities through Sport NI and delivered by Disability Sport NI. The investment is part of the Active Living: No Limits 2021 Action Plan to improve the health and wellbeing of people with a disability in Northern Ireland through participation in sport and active recreation.

The funded powerchairs will be used by players to compete in the AIPF Premier League and Internationally for Northern Ireland. Prior to securing the chairs, a number of the players had no chair to compete and most people who did were at a disadvantage because other players had faster chairs.

The Strikeforce chairs have been divided between players of three clubs thoughout Northern Ireland, Lightning PFC, Belfast Trailblazers and Devenish Warriors. This has also allowed Lightning and Trailblazers to re-distribute their Storm powerchairs to other players and clubs across the country resulting in the formation of two new powerchair football clubs, the Devenish Warriors and Hot Wheels PFC.
