Teresa Traynor was presented the Disability Sport NI ‘Club Person of the Year’ award for the sport of Wheelchair Basketball by Disability Sport NI’s Honorary President Angela Hendra MBE at the charity’s recent AGM.
The Disability Sport NI ‘Club Person of the Year’ Award recognises the person who has volunteered their time and worked tirelessly to ensure that their club is safe and sustainable, providing people with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in Wheelchair Basketball.
On receiving the award, Teresa comments,
“I’m so honoured to receive this award, and grateful and shocked to have been nominated.
“I joined wheelchair basketball as a volunteer to help my son Shane who is fifteen and wanted to be part of an all-inclusive sport. Craigavon Lakers has helped him so much.
“I have also volunteered in our local scout group 7th Dromore for nearly 10 years, so the knowledge that I have gained from this has helped with the set-up of the Lakers. I hope to continue volunteering for many years to come.”
Teresa has played an integral role in supporting the development of the Craigavon Lakers Wheelchair Basketball Club in Craigavon. Teresa, whose son plays for the club, was one of the founding members of the club and has been pivotal in driving and supporting the club to become independent and fully constituted.
Currently Teresa holds the role of Safe Guarding Officer but since the inception of the club has enthusiastically carried out a range of other roles as and when required. Teresa is a great asset to her club and a fantastic advocate for the sport of wheelchair basketball and the need to give people with disabilities the same opportunities as non- disabled people to become involved in sport.
