County Antrim Woman, Caroline Millar was presented the Disability Sport NI ‘Club Person of the Year’ award for the sport of Boccia by Disability Sport NI’s Honorary President Angela Hendra MBE at the charity’s recent AGM.

The Disability Sport NI ‘Club Person of the Year’ Award recognises the person who has volunteered their time and worked tirelessly to ensure that their club is safe and sustainable, providing people with physical disabilities the opportunity to participate in Boccia.

Boccia is a Paralympic sport, specifically designed for athletes with a disability affecting loco-motor function such as Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy and spinal injuries. At recreational level Boccia is played by people with a range of physical, sensory and learning disabilities.

On receiving the award, Caroline comments,

“I was totally honoured to receive this award and overwhelmed by those who nominated me. I have been playing Boccia for over 6 years and during that time I have made many new friends.

“I love the game so much that I did the level 1 coaching and level 1 referee courses, gaining success in both. My next aim is to get my level 2 awards. I would strongly encourage anyone to have a go.”

Caroline has been recognised for her work in developing the sport of boccia with the NI Polio Fellowship. Caroline has demonstrated her commitment to the sport by supporting the training and development of a range of players from beginner level to advanced.

Caroline is well versed in the many rules governing the sport and is in training to becoming an international referee, therefore her knowledge has been invaluable to the development of her club.
