Tandeming Together Cycling Club in Newry secures Disability Sport NI’s Inclusive Club Award for Disability Clubs.

The Disability Sport NI Inclusive Club Award recognises sports clubs who have made noteworthy improvements or introduced innovative programmes to include people with disabilities in the last twelve months.

The award was presented to the Chairman of the Club, Danny McSherry and Volunteer, Arnold Carville by Disability Sport NI Honorary President Dr Janet Gray MBE at the Disability Sport NI AGM.

Tandeming Together Cycling Club is club which provides people with sight loss the opportunity to enjoy club cycles and other organised events.

On receiving the award, Chairman Danny McSherry said,

“It is a great honour for Arnold and myself to receive this award on behalf of Tandeming Together Cycling Club.

“The mission of Tandeming Together Cycling Club is to encourage people with sight loss to keep fit and enjoy the countryside in the company of a sighted person (pilot) on a tandem bike.

“We also lend tandem bikes to cyclists with sight loss across the length and breadth of Ireland to ensure that as many people as possible are able to try it.”

The club recognises that opportunities for physical exercise for people with sight loss from rural areas in particular is limited and therefore strives to include as many people from rural areas as possible.

To facilitate this, the club supports people with sight loss during spinning classes and swimming sessions in Newry Leisure Centre. This is in addition to providing guides for people with sight loss in walking activities ranging from short walks on Newry Greenway and Towpath during the week to more adventurous hill walking activities at the weekend.

The club was recognised for the Inclusive Club Award due to its commitment to and track record of improving the physical fitness and mental wellbeing of people with sight loss in the Newry area while at the same time keeping all club activities social and fun.
