Wheelchair Basketball 3x3 Return from Commonwealth Games

Fri 5th August 2022

The Northern Ireland 3×3 Wheelchair Basketball team have returned from the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games after a successful tournament competing on the world stage. The team finished 5th overall, in what was the first time the format has been included in the Games.

Following a first game defeat to finalists, Canada, the highlight of Northern Ireland’s tournament will no doubt be a memorable 11-9 victory over eventual winners, Australia. In fact, Team NI proved to be the only team to beat the Australian team throughout the tournament and missed out on progression to the Semi Finals only on points difference.

The team consisting of Matt Rollston, Conn Nagle, James MacSorley and Nathan McCabe completed their tournament by defeating South Africa 10-7 to secure 5th place securing a record of 2 wins out of 3 matches.

With players returning home to their respective clubs Disability Sport NI Wheelchair Basketball Performance Officer, Phil Robinson, commended the team’s performance at the Games commenting:

“I am extremely proud of the squad, they showed their grit, determination and skill against world-class opposition.

They have done themselves, their families, the sport and the country proud. It has been a privilege for us to represent Team NI at our first Commonwealth Games.”
